The Role

PURPOSE OF THE POST:

Purpose:  

  • The Deputy Headteacher will work under the guidance and direction of the Headteacher. They will deputise for the Headteacher in their absence.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1.Strategic Direction and Development of the School

  • The Deputy Headteacher will work with the support and direction of the Headteacher and the Local Governing Body to promote the vision and strategic view for the school which will inspire and motivate pupils, staff, parents and wider members of the school community.
  • It is the responsibility of the Deputy Headteacher to support the Headteacher to work to achieve the strategic objectives set and to ensure the vision for the school is clearly articulated, shared, understood and implemented effectively by all.

Main Duties:

  • Work in partnership with the Headteacher to translate the vision into agreed objectives and improvement plans which target needs and improve outcomes.
  • Work under the direction of the Headteacher and senior Trust leaders to support in monitoring and evaluating the performance of the school.
  • Demonstrate vision, values and aspiration in everyday work and practice striving for excellence in all areas.
  • Motivate and work with others to create a positive climate for learning.
  • Ensure that implementation of strategic planning and the school culture and curriculum take account of the diversity, values and experience of the school and community at large.
  • Work under the direction of the senior Trust leaders to ensure the smooth running of the school in the incidence of longer-term absence of the Headteacher.
  • Serve as a Designated Safeguarding Lead for the School.

2.Teaching and Learning

  • The Deputy Headteacher supports the Headteacher to raise the quality of teaching and learning with a particular focus on the attainment and progress of vulnerable groups. This involves high expectations, maintaining and evaluating outcomes and establishing a successful learning culture which all impact on the achievement of nationally and locally recognised vulnerable groups.
  • It is the responsibility of the Deputy Headteacher to work under the direction of the Headteacher to lead and support all staff in order to ensure that locally agreed targets are met, that most teaching is judged good or better and that progress for nationally and locally recognised vulnerable groups is good with much that is outstanding. 

Main Duties:

  • Provide a strong role model for all staff which exemplifies high expectations for pupils and staff and the wider community of the school
  • Clearly demonstrate a culture and ethos of high aspiration, challenge and support where pupils vulnerable to under-achievement can achieve success and engage with their own learning
  • Establish creative, responsive and effective approaches to learning and teaching in order to engage and involve all pupils, and particularly those with individual needs
  • Implement strategies which secure high standards of behaviour and attendance
  • Lead and/or support and develop the wider curriculum in order to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that inspires, motivates and includes all pupils
  • Support the Headteacher in monitoring, evaluating and reviewing classroom practice in order to identify areas for development, prioritise actions and secure continuous improvement
  • Challenge under-performance at all levels and ensure that action is taken decisively to secure improvement
  • Model a healthy work life balance, actively promoting the wellbeing and healthy development of all children and staff.

3.Leading and Managing Staff

  • Effective communication and relationships are key to effective leadership. It is the responsibility of the Deputy Headteacher to ensure that there are good channels of communication across all teaching teams. They should demonstrate good and outstanding leadership and management at all levels to ensure that actions impact positively leading to good or better pupil outcomes. 
  • The Deputy Headteacher will hold particular responsibility for taking a lead role in ‘championing’ pupils who qualify for pupil premium in order to ensure that they make expected or better progress and achieve age-related expectations in line with their peers.

Main Duties:

  • Work with the guidance of the Headteacher to implement the staffing structure for the school
  • Lead teams within the school under the guidance and direction of the Headteacher
  • Support the Headteacher in ensuring that suitable arrangements are made, in accordance with relevant regulations and policy, for the career development of teachers and other staff in the School through the Trust process.
  • Coordinate and manage the development of professional knowledge, skills and abilities, providing opportunities for all staff to be involved in high quality continued professional development programmes
  • Coordinate and manage appropriate induction support for new staff
  • Support the Headteacher in challenging under performance at all levels following agreed Trust policies and procedures as appropriate
  • Promote and develop good leadership and management practice, positive staff participation, effective communication and clear procedures
  • Treat everyone fairly, equitably and with respect in order to promote and embed a positive School culture
  • Regularly review own practice and achievements, setting personal targets and take responsibility for own personal development. Take account of feedback from others
  • Manage own workload and that of others to allow an appropriate work/life balance
  • Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

4.Leading and Managing Resources

  • The Deputy Headteacher will work with the Headteacher to manage resources well in order to ensure the smooth running of the School. 
  • It is the responsibility of the Deputy Headteacher to work with the team to provide efficient and effective management of resources in order to secure best value and positive outcomes

Main Duties:

  • Take responsibility for organising all timetables and rotas to ensure that best use is made of time, resources and facilities
  • Support the Headteacher in managing and organising the school environment and facilities efficiently and effectively to ensure that the needs of the curriculum and health and safety regulations are met
  • Ensure that the range, quality and use of all available resources are monitored, evaluated and reviewed to improve the quality of education for all pupils and provide best value for money
  • Use and integrate a range of technologies effectively and efficiently to manage the school

5.Accountability

  • The Deputy Headteacher is accountable to the Headteacher in the first instance and then to the Senior Trust Leaders. is the responsibility of the Deputy Headteacher to support the Headteacher to rigorously monitor and evaluate the performance of the school and provide honest, informative reports as appropriate.

Main Duties:

1) In relation to the Headteacher

  • Report to the Headteacher as required
  • Meet regularly in order to monitor and evaluate the performance of the school
  • Work directly with the Headteacher in determining the strategic direction of the school and the wider deployment of resources

2) In relation to Local Governing Body:

  • Advise and assist in the exercising of its functions under the guidance and direction of the Headteacher
  • Report to the Local Governing Body as required

3) In relation to the pupils, their families and the wider community

  • Ensure that the needs of the pupils are at the heart of all decision making
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships which support learning
  • Promote a positive image of the School and the Trust as a whole
  • Provide regular communication and promote active engagement between home, School and the wider community
  • Provide regular opportunities for dialogue between families and staff

4) In relation to the Local Authority and partner agencies

  • Share information as appropriate
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships which support learning
  • Co-operate and work with relevant agencies to protect children and promote their wellbeing
  • Liaise with partner agencies and professional bodies in the best interests of the pupils and in the meeting of statutory obligations
